An architect and engineer by training, Carlo teaches at MIT, where he directs the Senseable City Lab, and is a founding partner of the international design and innovation office Carlo Ratti Associati. He graduated from the Politecnico di Torino and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, later earning his MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK. In the last decade, Carlo has given talks around the world on the theme of Smart Cities, while his work has been exhibited in international venues including the Venice Biennale, New York’s MoMA, London’s Science Museum, and Barcelona’s Design Museum. Two of his projects – the Digital Water Pavilion and the Copenhagen Wheel – were hailed by Time Magazine as ‘Best Inventions of the Year’. He has been included in Blueprint Magazine’s ‘25 People who will Change the World of Design’ and in Wired Magazine’s ‘Smart List: 50 people who will change the world’. He was curator for the Future Food District at Expo Milano 2015, and is currently serving as co-chair of the World Economic Forum Global Council on the Future of Cities and Urbanization. Graduate architect from the Università degli Studi Roma Tre in 2009; Antonio also has a post-graduate ‘Master in Advanced Architecture’ from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Barcelona. Between 2006 and 2010 he worked as a trainee in the cabinet of Prof. Maurizion Marcelloni in Rome, mainly in the field of architectural and urban planning. In 2011 he was awarded a scholarship to work with the FabLab of Barcelona and was responsible for organizing and running the digital fabrication facilities. He joined CRA in October 2006.
Daniele Belleri is a design journalist and communication consultant, interested in multidisciplinary readings and connections. As a writer, his works have appeared on publications including Wired Italia, Domus, Corriere della Sera, IL Magazine (IT), Volume (NL), Afisha (RU), CoBo social (HK). He is a partner of Granger Press, a strategic design agency whose list of clients includes cultural organisations and businesses such as Institute of Russian Realist Art, Triennale Design Museum, Pandora, Santa&Cole. He has been teaching at Milan’s NABA academy and at Moscow’s Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design, where he also graduated. Daniele joined CRA in 2016 as communication manager.
Chiara graduated with honors in Architecture for Sustainability at Politecnico di Torino, with the thesis “Save/safe Murazzi. A project for urban security: social sustainability and light”. She graduated in Trieste and Madrid, while she studied CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) in Copenhagen. She is interested in social environment and in the dynamics of social participation; she works in Ecoborgo Campidoglio in Turin organizing occasions of interaction. She’s co-founder of the collective de:forma which actively trains architectural students in creating DIY experimental projects. She joined CRA in November 2015.
Edoardo, originally from the breathtaking hill town of Santo Stefano Belbo, is completing his Bachelor degree in Engineering & Management with focus on IT and ICT. After an experience in managing a family business in wine production, in October 2016 he has decided to step up in the cocktail world by joining the Makr Shakr team as a trainee. Now supporting the management operations, he is eager to grow professionally, gaining an in-depth awareness of the work dynamics.
Alberto graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico di Torino with an undergraduate thesis regarding the reciprocal frame system inspired by “Buckminister Fuller” and a masters project “New Transit Camp Social Club”, awarded one of the World’s Best Graduation Projects in the Archiprix 2011. He has participated in a number of international workshops and won prestigious competitions including the international “Venice CityVision” with the project “ROOMS in the Lagoon” and the 2013 Young Architects Program at MAXXI/MoMA, in Rome, with the project “HE”. He joined CRA in May 2009.
Esther graduated in 2015 with a bachelor degree in Architecture, Urbanism and the Built Environment at the Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands. Currently, she is finishing her master degree in Management in the Built Environment at the same university. She believes that as design projects become more and more complex, knowledge and skills in process and management are of vital importance to professionals in the world of architecture and construction. At CRA Esther is doing an internship where she does research into the office management and business development of the studio. Besides this, she is participant in the Honours Programme Master for which she researches and test the implementation of Lean Thinking into the design process of medium-sized architecture studios in the tender phase. She joined CRA in November 2016.
Andrea graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico di Torino with a thesis on the role of digital technologies in the contemporary city, developed at the Senseable City Lab at MIT. In 2008, his work with Weekend In A Morning “The tree sap, the divers and the silence” was exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale. In 2010, with Weekend In a Morning, he won the international competition “Rome City Vision”. He writes periodically for the architecture magazine “City Vision Mag” and is a teaching assistant for the Architecture Design workshop at the Politecnico di Torino and Politecnico di Milano. He has been collaborating with CRA since 2009.
Roberta was born in Turin in 1997, and obtained a diploma in Administration, Finance and Marketing at the Germano Sommeiller Commercial and Technical Institute in 2016. Previously she followed a course in “Economics and Growth” at Turin’s SAA – School of Management. At the same time, she has cultivated a personal interest for interior design – in particular vintage design. After several jobs in previous years, in September 2016 she joined CRA’s administration team – an opportunity not to be missed, for her studies and her passions.
Gary Di Silvio
Gary graduated in Architecture at the University of Architecture of Venice IUAV in 2012, focusing on environmental sustainability. He is currently studying a Masters in Digital Architecture at the same university, where he has been able to deepen in his understanding and knowledge with regards to new digital tools for architectural visualization, parametric modeling and rapid prototyping. He joined CRA in May 2013 as a CG Artist.
Andrea graduated from the University of Architecture IUAV of Venice in 2009. From his second year of university he has worked with a variety of practices, architects and universities, gaining experience of work at different architectural scales and travelling to South America, Asia and Northern Europe. He began working at CRA in February 2010, fascinated by the possibility of exploring new ways of merging technologies with the historic city, design and place-making. He worked as a project manager on the Future Food District for Expo 2015.
Andrea is an architectural engineer graduated in Engineering and Architecture (MSc) from the Politecnico di Torino. His graduation thesis gathers his researches, initiated after an inspiring work experience in London at Urban Future Organization, on a computational approach to architectural design and urban planning. He has presented his work as visiting lecturer at the University of Bergamo, University of Pescara, and Politecnico di Torino.
His researches have been published by IaaC Bits, Urbanistica Informazione and Osservatorio Nazionale Smart City. In 2014 he also contributed to the best seller book “AAD Algorithms-Aided Design” by Arturo Tedeschi. In the recent years his project Mantica, awarded by CityVision Mag, has been exposed in Rome, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles and New York. Other awarded projects are “So.Ma” for the digital crafting competition Reshape and “Responsive Environment” for the CAME Design Award. To push his interest in digital technologies beyond the architectural field, in 2014 he co-founded in Sicily the digital startup “SkilledApp”, later rewarded and supported by Telecom Italia and the European projects FIWARE and Fed4fire.
A 2014 MArch graduate from the Bartlett School of Architecture, Andrea has a background in subjective digital design and contemporary theory inspired by the imprecise nature of Gothic craftsmanship. His work exploring the potential of “glitch” in architectural design was featured in the third issue of Burrasca Magazine in November 2015. After having worked for several years as both a job runner and complex three-dimensional model coordinator in various world-class architecture practices, he joined CRA in July 2016.
Valentina graduated with honors from the Faculty of Architecture of Reggio Calabria, with a thesis on the regeneration of the harbor basin of Ischia, which was awarded first prize for “Provocation” at IsAM, 2012 (Ischia). For several years she has been a teaching assistant for various studios on architecture and urban design, and has participated in numerous workshops as well as national and international competitions. In 2012, she worked as a researcher at I2a, the International Institute of Architecture (Vico Morcote, Switzerland), where she co-authored “Beyond Urbanization”, a publication on contemporary urban conditions and intermodal nodes in the Lugano area. She joined Carlo Ratti Associati in April 2013.
Emma holds a professional masters in architecture and post-professional masters in urban design from McGill University. She has worked throughout Canada as well as in the US, Italy and the UK. Her background in architecture and urban design was geared towards applied research, creative design methodologies and “big picture” concepts. Emma joined CRA in 2014 to fulfill the role of architect and PA manager of Carlo Ratti’s agenda and speaking engagements.
Damiano took his first degree in Modern Literature, focusing on cinema, and meanwhile taught himself video-making and design skills. He worked as director and editor of TV and Web advertisements. In 2010, Damiano entered the Masters in Visual and Multimedia Communication Design at IUAV, focusing on interaction design. With his first project he was appointed finalist of the Adobe Design Achievement Awards and collaborated with Adobe for the official awards’ mobile app. In 2012 he joined the MIT Senseable City Lab in Boston as a visiting student, working with data visualisation and interface design. With a master thesis on personalised and responsive mobile maps, he graduated cum laude in April 2011, was awarded by MIT Technology Review and the Lucky Strike Talented Designer Award, and co-founded the startup Hic Locative Media before joining CRA in September 2014 as interaction designer.
Melanie graduated from ETH Zurich with a Master’s Degree in architecture in 2015. During her studies, she acquired knowledge in urban planning by interning at Zurich’s urban planning office in 2011, developing redensifying strategies for suburban areas. Subsequently, she was working on the project „Fábrica de Cultura“, a cultural center for Barranquilla (Colombia), at Urban Think Tank. As a participant of research-based Summer Schools in Ethiopia and Colombia she became interested in the development of collaborative problem solving strategies for urban environments in interdisciplinary teams. In her free time, she is acquiring skills in web design and in the digitally-aided design of everyday objects. Melanie joined Carlo Ratti Associati at the beginning of 2017.
Alessandro graduated in Industrial Engineering (MSc. Honors) from the Politecnico di Torino and Project Management (MSc. Distinction) from Queensland University of Technology, before beginning his career working in both China and the Middle East. He is actively involved in research, investigating the development of Lean Manufacturing across multiple sectors, and is currently collaborating with CRA as project manager in the design and realization of new products for market. Passionate about exploring the world, Alessandro has an incessant curiosity in gaining new knowledge through combining different disciplines.
A student of architecture at the Politecnico di Torino, Pietro has interned at Fuksas Architects Associates in Rome, 2007, and worked with CRA part-time since 2008. For several years he has been interested in parametric architecture, physical computing and rapid prototyping, in addition to the relationship between technology and architecture. He has taken several courses in this specialization, organized in collaboration with the RPI, AA, Columbia University and the IAAC in Barcelona. He is one of the winners of Autoprogettazione 2.0, design competition launched in 2012 by Domus and collaborator of the Turin Fablab.
Trained initially as an interior architect in Estonia and working on various projects through all stages of design and construction, Monika completed a design masters in The Netherlands in 2008 before moving to the UK to work for architectural company Slider Studio. In 2011, she graduated with distinction from the Centre for Research Architecture in Goldsmiths College, University of London, and continued her research in Jan van Eyck Academie, post-graduate research and production center in 2012. Monika is interested in readings of contemporary political issues within a constructed, real or imaginary architecture.
Benedetta graduated in Economics at City University, London, in 2003 and spent over 8 years working in project management and statistical analysis for the UK Government. Upon returning to Italy in 2011, she joined Inner Design, a Turin based online design hub that connects experts, bloggers and worldwide lovers of interior design, promoting young and upcoming designers as well as taking care of the editorial content of the website. After a short but rewarding experience as Office Manager for an architectural studio in Milan, Benedetta has returned to Turin to join CRA in 2014.
Peter Geelmuyden Magnus
Peter is a Norwegian architect specialized in construction technology and urbanism. He completed his Master of Advanced Architecture at IAAC in 2016 as top 3 in his class. His graduation project, Hybritat, is selected to represent IAAC at the European Architecture Medals 2016 and proposes the use of drones as agents to help renaturalize urban areas in Newark, NJ. He previously holds a Master of Architectural Technology from ETSAB, Barcelona and a Bachelor in Architecture from Politecnico di Milano. He has experience working for several architecture firms in Barcelona and Oslo. He joined CRA in October 2016.
Alfredo graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. He was involved in a research program at Milan Politecnico about high efficient vehicles (electric, solar and fuel cell powered). He participated in numerous international competitions about fuel efficiency and he and his team won awards and prizes about vehicle design and set international and Italian records. Since 2011, he worked on some innovative business ideas and co-founded a startup company in the 3D printing industry. Alfredo also collaborated with several companies as a freelance consultant, mostly working on mechanical design, product development, prototyping and composite materials. He loves outdoor sports and on the road adventures; he is an avid motorcyclist.
Mariachiara graduated with honors in Architecture from Politecnico di Milano, with a thesis about the processes of appropriation of urban space and the relation between formal and informal settlements in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. She spent the second year of Master and the thesis period at UFBA, collaborating with Laboratório Urbano, research group of the post-graduation in Architecture and Urbanism. She participated at the third Biennial of Art of Bahia with an intervention on urban practices as drivers of transformation of the city. She joined CRA in December 2014.
Chiara graduated in Construction Engineer from Politecnico di Torino. She won MURST 2-years professional training scholarship on restoration, acoustics, lighting, architecture and design, construction management, mainly held at Borini Costruzioni spa, Politecnico di Torino and CNR ICITE. Chiara has been working as Plans Coordinator for many building sites of Borini Costruzioni spa until 2003. She was Project Manager at Mediapolis Engineering srl, where she followed major projects such as shopping malls, residential buildings, schools, and nursing homes. Chiara coordinated several tenders and competitions. After being partner of CRA between 2003 and 2006, Chiara is now back to the studio to assist our design team.
Saverio graduated with honors from the Università IUAV di Venezia with a thesis on sustainable growth scenarios for industrial areas. While at IUAV, he spent 6 months at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles with a FIPSE scholarship and a year at the TU DELFT under the Erasmus program. From 2004 to 2006, he was project architect for Archea in Florence. With a Fulbright scholarship, Saverio moved to Cambridge where he received a Master in Architecture at Harvard University GSD (Graduate School of Design); he was awarded the Faculty Design Award for significant design achievements. While in the United States, he worked for KSWA and the MIT Senseable City Lab. Saverio returned to IUAV where, in 2012, he completed a Ph.D. ‘Villard d’Honnecourt’ with research on the possibilities of the ‘rural’ in defining a state of ‘opposition’ to the dominant urban paradigm. From 2008 to 2013, as founding partner of Spedstudio, he won several international design competitions such as Aalst masterplan (2012 – 1st prize); Casa della Memoria (2012- 2nd prize); Albarola square (2010 – 1st prize) and Carso2014+ (2010 – shortlisted). Saverio joined CRA in 2014 as a senior project manager.
Marco Maria Pedrazzo
Marco is a trained architect, licensed engineer and perspective Ms in Strategic Design and Management at Parsons (NY), with a focus on computation in design. His defining projects in this emergent field span from humanitarian design (Open Source Emergency Shelter) to urban systems (Social Computation for urban mobility, with MIT Senseable City Lab). Building on the experience matured at CRA during his 3 years as designer and project manager at the merger of design, spatial systems, and dynamic technology integration, Marco has worked with a number of start-up firms, delivering a full spectrum of customer experience, in order to identify their strengths, create a compelling story and maximize the value delivered to clients. Marco graduated from the highly selective Alta Scuola Politecnica, and served as an active leader for the Design Studio, Technology Studio and thematic workshops in Politecnico di Torino, where he is currently visiting researcher. In October 2016 he re-joined CRA as evangelist and business developer.
Andrea is a multi-disciplinary designer who took his first degree in Disciplines of Art, Music and Cinema with a major in Computer Science and Multimedia Systems. He worked as Interaction Design researcher trainee for the International Research Centre Casa Paganini – InfoMus. He won in 2015 a two-year scholarship for the master in Communication Design at Milan’s NABA, where he focused on interactive design. In 2016, he won two awards in the One Show Young Ones creativity contest in New York: the Silver Pencil Award in the category “LEGO / Logo Design” and the Merit Award in the category “LEGO – Experiential Design and Promotion”. He has also been awarded for his portfolio website with a Special Kudos Award by CSS Design Awards, a Site of The Day award by Design Nominees and an Honorable Mention by Awwwards. During his university studies he also followed several courses at the Interaction Design Foundation and he’s actually the Milan & Turin Local Leader for the Interaction Design Association (IxDA). He have been granted the opportunity to join the official CSSDA judging panel, working closely with a team of digital professionals to judge the best websites in the world. He joined CRA studio in June 2016 as interaction designer.
Lorenzo graduated with a Bachelors degree in Engineering and Management (Logistics and Production) in December 2013. His thesis explored a comparison between main production control systems: MRP Conwip and Kanban. Within the university context, he pursued several projects based on strategic analysis. Lorenzo worked part-time supporting management activities in different firms both in Turin and Messina. He is currently working towards a Master of Science in Engineering and Management, and is highly interested in embracing new professional relationships and improving his competence through new experiences. His hobbies include travelling and discovering new cultures. Lorenzo joined CRA office in October 2015.
Andrea graduated with a Masters degree in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano. First explored at a workshop in collaboration with Stanford University, his graduate thesis proposed an Innovation Research Park for Palo Alto. Andrea has participated in several international workshops in Europe, USA and Canada where he spent 6 months studying at McGill University. He worked for EXPO Milano designing and managing the exhibitions at the Azerbaijan and USA pavilions. Andrea joined CRA in November 2015.
Emanuele Rossetti (born 1969 in Turin, Italy) is an Italian engineer, educated at “Politecnico di Torino” (IT) and “City of London Polytechnic” (UK). He holds a PhD in applied mechanics and has taught robot’s mechanics at “Politecnico di Torino” (IT). A seasoned executive with experience and interest in high growth businesses, Emanuele has a strong track record in developing, structuring and executing big projects in public organizations (head of Overlay department for the Torino Organizing Committee for the XX Winter department Olympic Games, from bidding process in 2001 to closing ceremony in 2006) as well as in private companies (CEO of Nussli Italia, from the foundation of the company in 2007 to securing and managing large construction projects for the Universal Expo Milano in 2015). From October 2016 he started a new adventure as CEO of Makr Shakr, the maker of the world’s first robotic bar, where he’s now leveraging his skills at designing and managing complex processes and relationships, and his ability to recruit and manage high performing teams. Most importantly, he can quench his thirst for creativity, innovation and perfectly mixed cocktails.
Nicola graduated with a Bachelors degree Architecture from Venice’s Iuav in July 2014. He is currently finishing his studies for a Master Degree in Sustainable Architecture at the Politecnico di Torino with the thesis project about Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic stadium. He has participated in a number of international workshops and won the workshop “Intelligent Perth” about a concept masterplan of Midland, Australia. He is also an American football player and since 2015 he joined the Italian Nation team.
Carlotta graduated cum laude in Communication and Media Culture from the University of Turin with a thesis about Sound Art. She is now studying for a PhD in Digital Humanities at the University of Genova and supporting CRA in press and communications. She is interested in the semiotics of art languages, above all in music and contemporary art. As a musician/songwriter, with the stage name “Carlot-ta”, she published two studio albums. She has played in a number of prestigious venues and festivals (MiTo Settembre Musica, Auditorium Parco della Musica, Liverpool Sound City, Paratissima Skopje, Premio Tenco, Festival dei due mondi…) and her songs have been included in advertising campaigns (Ford 2012) and movies (La luna su Torino by Davide Ferrario, 2014).
Francesco graduated from Politecnico di Torino in 2010 with a master thesis on informal settlements in Mumbai which was selected as one of the World’s Best Graduation Projects in the Archiprix 2011. As an architect, Francesco studied and worked in Turin, Turku (Finland), Madrid, Bruxelles, Boston and Mumbai developing attitude to multidisciplinary and dynamic environments. Since 2010 Francesco worked with MARC Architetti Associati in Turin, taking part in the creative process of the design as well as coordinating the executive drawings and the construction works. In 2011, within the project Situa.to/ Your city, He conceived and cured the projects “I muri di Mirafiori, Volodja” with Wu Ming 1 and “Cantiere Barca” with Raumlabor in Turin. Francesco joined CRA in November 2014.
Alessandro graduated in Architecture at the University of Florence in 2016 with a thesis that explored the potential of robotic construction and 3D printing for architecture. He participated to different workshops about parametric computation, digital prototyping and robotic fabrication, in addition to be selected to take part to a research project in Shanghai in July 2015. He is co-founder of the most read Italian website about 3D printing- Stampa3d-forum.it - and he worked as 3D printing instructor and consultant for professionals. Alessandro joined CRA in October 2016.
Michele holds a Master degree in engineering and architecture from Università di Catania and a post-graduate Diploma from Scuola Superiore di Catania, an institution of excellency in education. He was a teaching assistant for two years to the chair of Architectural Composition at University of Catania and then he spent some time at ETH of Zurich as Visiting Scientist, developing an experimental pavilion based on vacuum and origami. His project has been published on specialistic journals and received several awards. Since 2013, he has worked throughout Italy and Europe, joining some renowned international firms, such as EM2N Architekten in Zurich and Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos in Madrid. He is qualified both as an architect and an engineer. He joined CRA in October 2015.
Filippo was born in Turin where he graduated in industrial engineering and management in july 2015. Before joining CRA he worked for sport and entertainment associations, dealing with events and cultural activities organization. He was also an intern in BasicNet, where he was operative for six months in the logistics department. He joined CRA in November 2015, as a member of the Makr Shakr team.
Gianluca holds a degree in Architecture for Sustainable Project from the Politecnico di Torino, with a thesis regarding the Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition (with publication as meritorious argument). During the university period, he has joined a series of participatory planning workshop, including “Designing public spaces of interaction” and “Redevelopment of the area Ex-Macello in Moncalieri”. He has been a teaching assistant for the Architecture Design workshop at the Politecnico di Torino, and together with Professor Roberto Apostolo has co-organized the “Metamorphosis art / architecture” international design workshop for students at the Castello di Rivoli Contemporary Art Museum. He is passionate in the world of architectural visualization at large: renders, graphics and animation. He joined CRA in September 2016.
Silvia graduated in Architecture at the Università IUAV di Venezia in 2003.
She then moved to Florence where she received a Master in Sustainable Architecture at the University of Architecture of Florence. From 2004 to 2006 she worked as an editorial assistant for the architectural magazine Area.
After moving to the United States, she collaborated as a landscape architect with Martha Schwartz in Cambridge from 2006 to 2008. Back in Italy she won several international design competitions as founding partner of Spedstudio. In 2015 she completed a Ph.D. in Architecture at IUAV with a thesis on the english architect Paffard Keatinge-Clay.
Silvia joined CRA in 2015 supporting the press and communication team.
Walter graduated from Politecnico di Torino with an urban design project which was awarded the Archiprix 2003′s Honourable Mention – World’s Best Graduation Projects. Often invited as a lecturer by various universities and cultural institutions, Walter is currently serving as adjunct professor at the University of Ferrara’s Department of Architecture, where he is coordinating, together with Gabriele Lelli and Gianluca Cristoforetti, the multidisciplinary research group Next City Lab. Walter practices in Turin in the fields of architecture and urban planning, and he is a board member of OII+, a cultural association promoting architecture through events, publications, lectures, and workshops. After having contributed to the founding of the studio and played an active role until 2014, Walter Nicolino now acts as an external consultant to CRA.
